“We are in deep grief and bitterness,” the DP said in a statement, calling him as a “father figure” for South Korea’s democracy.

“This year has been especially hard for us as we have lost earlier in the year yet another political leader, former President Roh Moo-hyun. We feel as if we have lost both root and spirit of our democracy,” it added.

The opposition Liberty Forward Party (LFP) also praised Kim for overcoming the political struggles he had to face.

“The many achievements and footprints that the departed has left will be remembered and appraised by generations to come,” said LFP spokesperson Park Sun-young.

Earlier in the day, Kim Dae-jung, who has been hospitalized for pneumonia for more than a month, died at the age of 85.
